School evacuated by explosive device

MCDONOUGH, Ga., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A private school in Georgia reopened Friday, a day after students and teachers were evacuated when an explosive device was found in a backpack on the premises.

A boy was taken into custody, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Authorities say they found components for another device in his backpack and two more devices at the home where he lives with his grandparents.

Police refused to say whether the boy is a student at the Lake Dow Christian Academy in McDonough near Atlanta.

Henry County Public Safety Director Mike Turner told the newspaper the boy was "extremely contrite," adding that he appeared to be realizing how much trouble he is in.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation bomb squad exploded the device from the backpack outside the school without incident.
