Fox denies terrorist threat at border

SANTIAGO, Chile, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Mexican President Vicente Fox Sunday denied that al Qaida terrorists had penetrated Mexico's border with the United States.

In an interview with CNN in Santiago, Chile, where he was participating in the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, Fox said the rumors of the last few weeks were untrue.

"In the case of border security and of this partial information or rumors that members of al Qaida would be moving across Mexico, nothing of that is the truth -- we have no information that is confirmed," Fox said.

Still, Fox said that terrorism was a worrisome issue for Mexico and the region. Mexico is working closely with U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge on border security issues, he said.

"We are worried for the United States, Mexico, Canada or any other country that could be the object of these acts of violence," Fox said. "So we should be very clever, strong, and committed to work on security at that border."
