Scott Peterson defense begins its case

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- The defense began presenting its case Monday in the California trial of Scott Peterson, who is accused of murdering his wife and unborn son.

The judge in the Redwood City trial began the day by denying a defense motion for dismissal of the case due to insufficient evidence.

Peterson's attorney, Mark Geragos, has based his defense on the primarily circumstantial nature of the prosecution's case.

Peterson is accused of killing his pregnant wife, Laci, in their Modesto home in late 2002 and dumping her body in San Francisco Bay. He could get the death penalty if convicted.

The Modesto Bee said Geragos began his case by focusing on the district attorney's contention that Peterson used cement to fashion anchors to weigh down Laci's body.

Closing arguments are tentatively slated for the first week in November.
