CNN: US attempted to save three hostages

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- U.S. forces twice tried to rescue the three hostages in Iraq who were eventually beheaded but couldn't locate them, CNN reported Tuesday.

Intelligence pointed to two different locations in Baghdad, but both times rescues were attempted when the forces arrived the hostages were not there, CNN reports citing an unnamed U.S. official with direct knowledge of the operations.

It is not clear whether the hostages were moved, or whether the intelligence was faulty and the hostages were never there.

Kidnappers took American Eugene Armstrong and Jack Hensley, along with Briton Kenneth Bigley from their home in an upscale neighborhood of Baghdad on September 16.

The first attempt occurred before September 20, when Armstrong was beheaded. The second attempt was made after that date.
