Democrats ask Nader camp to 'swap' votes

DETROIT, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Some supporters of Democrat John Kerry are seeking to swap votes in swing states with independent U.S. presidential candidate Ralph Nader.

First tried in 2000, the idea is to get Nader supporters to vote for Kerry in battleground states in exchange for votes by Kerry supporters for Nader in uncontested states, the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday.

Interested parties may check for details on Votepair.org. Its slogan is "uniting progressives through strategic" voting.

"The vote-pairing movement believes that another Bush administration will be four more years of disaster for the American people," votepair.org says.

Liberal swing state voters who agree to withhold a vote for Nader or this year's Green Party candidate David Cobb, and cast ballots for Kerry instead, could help avoid "perpetual war" and save the environment and women's rights at the same time, the site says.

A lawyer working with the group says the arrangement is legal.
