TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Former Florida state legislator Connie Mack IV, has emerged victorious in a tough GOP primary for the congressional seat once held by his father.
Mack, the son of former Florida Republican congressman and senator Connie Mack III, defeated state Rep. Carole Green and two others Tuesday in one of the country's most hotly contested primaries.
Mack's opponents in the race had charged he was merely trying to trade on his famous name to win election to Congress while accusing him of being a carpetbagger for having moved back into the district from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., which he represented in the state's House of Representatives.
Mack won with 36 percent of the vote to Green's 32 percent, with a winning margin of less than 3,000 votes. Mack is the heavy favorite to win the seat in November, which is currently held by U.S. Rep. Porter Goss, a retiring Republican House member whom President Bush has nominated to head the CIA.
