Dems target Cheney on Haliburton ties

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Democrats targeted Vice President Dick Cheney Wednesday for his ties to the giant Haliburton corporation.

Before Cheney addressed the Republican National Convention in New York Wednesday night, Democratic leaders blasted him over his close association with Haliburton, which has become one of the largest contractors and beneficiaries of U.S.-occupied Iraq.

Cheney is the former CEO of Haliburton, one of the largest oil field supply firms in the world. Earlier this year the company was awarded a $7 billion no-bid contract to help rebuild Iraq.

"We are focusing on Haliburton today because it is emblematic of how this administration governs," Terry McAuliffe, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, told a news conference. "Haliburton is a proof point of how whenever (President George W.) Bush is faced with a choice, he sides with the special interest at the expense of the middle class."
