Wife: Culture led to leaving baby in hotel

NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A difference in culture and lapse in judgment were behind a couple leaving their infant alone in a New York hotel room, the mother told the New York Post.

Police were called to the Waldorf-Astoria hotel Saturday afternoon when a housekeeper found the infant sleeping in its crib with no one else in the room.

The unidentified mother and her Swiss husband Michel Regamey had left to have lunch with their other child, a 2-year-old boy.

Police took the infant to a hospital, where it was examined and found to be in good health.

"It's just a matter of a different culture," the woman told the Post Monday. "We are nice people and good parents."

Despite that, police charged the father with endangering the welfare of a child and released him on his own recognizance Sunday night. He will appear in court Oct. 4.

"I'm just sad because it's our last day here in the city and this is not a good way to end it," the mother said.
