Yemen hails cooperation with U.S.

SANAA, Yemen, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said his country is cooperating with the U.S. war against terror -- not taking orders from the United States.

In remarks published in the Yemeni press Monday, Saleh accused opposition parties of circulating allegations Yemen is subservient to the United States to discredit the government in public eye.

Opposition parties charged recently Yemeni authorities granted the U.S. ambassador in Sanaa permission to monitor anti-terrorism activities and run military operations directly.

Saleh said, however, U.S. assistance to his country in combating terrorism is "limited."

The United States supplied Yemen with speedboats to help Yemeni coast guards protect the country's 2,200-kilometer (1,375-mile) coast from terrorist infiltration and attacks.
