WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Sen. John Kerry got the smallest convention in boost in more than 30 years, a top pollster has told the New York Times.
Frank Newport, editor in chief of the Gallup Poll, told the paper Kerry's rise in opinion polls following last week's Democratic National Convention in Boston was the smallest post convention bounce enjoyed by any candidate since former Sen. George McGovern was nominated by the Democrats in Miami in 1972, the New York Times reported Tuesday.
"Three surveys conducted since Mr.Kerry accepted the nomination on Thursday in Boston found that the contest between him and (President George W.) Bush remained, as measured in a head-to-head contest, little different from when Mr. Kerry chose John Edwards as his vice-presidential running mate," the New York Times said. "The two presidential candidates were either tied or Mr. Kerry had a slight lead," it said.
