Berger steps aside as adviser to Kerry

WASHINGTON, July 20 (UPI) -- Clinton administration national security adviser Sandy Berger withdrew from an advisory position in the Kerry campaign Tuesday amid continued controversy.

"Sandy Berger is my friend, and he has tirelessly served this nation with honor and distinction," presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., said in a statement on Berger's decision. "I respect his decision to step aside as an adviser to the campaign until this matter is resolved objectively and fairly."

Berger has been accused of illegally removing from the National Archives classified documents critical of the Clinton administration's efforts against terror.

Later reports, however, indicated Berger had inadvertently taken some internal reports about security measures as he prepared for his testimony before the panel investigating the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
