No administrator left behind

NEW YORK, June 30 (UPI) -- New York City is preparing to fire five public school administrators who accepted paychecks for doing exactly what they were given to do -- nothing.

The veteran assistant principals, who earn as much as $106,000 yearly, were placed in a regional office last fall for three to six months awaiting re-assignment, the Post reported Wednesday.

They were not assigned specific duties and refused to do clerical work.

Schools Chancellor Joel Klein said he wants to fire the five, not because they did nothing, but because an investigation revealed they did nothing in the wrong places.

To wit:

-- Judith Grebin spent nearly 50 hours at the Waldorf-Astoria, buying tickets at Lincoln Center and shopping at Bloomingale's, Kmart and Macy's;

-- Susan Brown allegedly "stole" 26 hours of pay on 10 separate days out of the office, often at home;

-- Ketty Levantrosser now teaching at the High School for Leadership, was seen on eight days shopping in places like Lord & Taylor;

-- Doris Collins filmed shopping at Macy's and Pier 1; and

-- Andrea Cottman, caught on surveillance browsing at Barnes & Noble.
