Yemen president to attend G-8 summit

SANAA, Yemen, June 4 (UPI) -- Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh will attend the G-8 summit in the United States next week at the invitation of President George Bush, officials said Friday.

An official source told UPI Saleh will brief the leaders of the eight most industrialized countries in the world on "Yemen's achievements in terms of boosting democracy and introducing political reforms."

He said the Yemeni president will also raise the latest developments in the Middle East, especially violence in the Palestinian territories and the "role which the international community should be playing to stop Israel's violations against the Palestinian people."

The source said Saleh will brief the G-8 meeting on Yemen's vision of a peace settlement in the Middle East and on political reforms Arab countries discussed at their summit in Tunisia last month.

Several Arab countries were invited to the summit, including Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which declined the invitation.

The G-8 group which comprises Germany, Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States will meet in Georgia next week.
