Syrian president warns Israel

JERUSALEM, May 2 (UPI) -- The Syrian president has said an Israeli attempt to assassinate Palestinian leaders in his country would be an act of aggression drawing a response in kind.

Syrian President Bashar Assad made the remarks to Al Jazeera television, Israel Radio reported Sunday. The Ha'aretz news service said the comments were an apparent reference to Hamas leader Khaled Mashal, who operates out of Syria. In the last two months, Israeli forces have assassinated Hamas chief Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and his successor Abdel Aziz Rantisi in the last two months.

Syria, however, is facing the threats of sanctions from the United States for harboring and supporting terrorist organizations.

The White House announced Friday the U.S. is moving toward implementing the Syria Accountability Act, approved by Congress earlier this year.
