SAN DIEGO, May 1 (UPI) -- The oldest African-American fraternity at San Diego State University has been suspended for hazing, the Union-Tribune reported Saturday.
A university investigation found Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, on campus since 1952, subjected prospective members to physical abuse last fall. The fraternity has been suspended for three years, and four members face discipline that can include expulsion.
"The forms of physical abuse the investigation found were fairly serious," said Jason Foster, a spokesman for the California school. No other details were provided.
The suspension prevents the fraternity from holding parties or meetings until the end of spring semester 2007, prohibits fund-raising on campus and blocks fraternity teams from participating in intramural sports leagues.
The national Kappa Alpha Psi organization was the first to be notified. It investigated the hazing activities and implemented its own set of sanctions.
"Kappa Alpha Psi has a zero tolerance for hazing and we're pleased that the university, after finding these instances, has taken a direct stand," said Richard Lee Snow, executive director of the fraternity's international headquarters in Philadelphia.
