Senior Jordan al-Qaida operative killed

AMMAN, Jordan, April 26 (UPI) -- A senior al-Qaida operative was among four terrorists killed in a clash with Jordanian police in Amman last week, security sources said Monday.

The sources told UPI Mowaffal Ali Adwan, code-named Abu Omar, was killed in the operation in a densely-populated neighborhood of al-Shahemi in eastern Amman last Tuesday.

Adwan was being tried in absentia by the state security court on charges of belonging to al-Qaida and its affiliated Ansar al-Islam, which is based in northern Iraq.

He was also accused of planning terrorist attacks against tourism centers and resorts as well as government installations and buildings, including the Jordanian intelligence quarters.

As many as 14 people, including Ansar al-Islam chief, Mullah Karikar, are being tried in absentia in the same case.
