Slovak premier's support plummets

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia, April 22 (UPI) -- Public support for Slovak Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda has plunged to just 3.8 percent, an opinion poll indicated Thursday.

The UVVM polling agency asked voters to say which Slovak politicians they trusted most. Robert Fico, leader of the center-left opposition SMER party came top with 23.1 percent. Defeated presidential candidate Vladimir Meciar was second with 19 percent. President elect Ivan Gasparovic was third with 12.1 percent.

Support for Dzurinda's government has fallen sharply due to the social effects of radical economic reforms. The government hopes for a resurgence in its popularity by the time of the next parliamentary elections in 2006 on the back of falling unemployment and rising growth.
