Kerry taps former Dukakis aide

WASHINGTON, April 2 (UPI) -- John Sasso, once a top aide to Michael Dukakis in his 1988 presidential campaign, has been named to a senior party post by Sen. John F. Kerry, D-Mass.

The Kerry campaign said in a statement that Sasso would assume the newly created position of general election manager at the Democratic National Committee, representing the interests of the Kerry campaign and serving as a liaison to the party's leadership.

In 1998, Sasso was fired from the Dukakis campaign after it was learned he had orchestrated an attack on Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., by secretly distributing to the media a video showing that Biden had plagiarized liberally from the speeches of British Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock.

The Dukakis campaign had initially denied any involvement in the distribution of the tape.
