Gandhi family scion to contest polls

NEW DELHI, March 22 (UPI) -- India's opposition Congress party has said that Rahul Gandhi, grandson of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, will contest the upcoming federal elections.

Gandhi, 33, whose father, grandmother and great-grandfather were prime ministers of India, would contest from Amethi, a seat his father and mother have won separately in the past.

Harvard educated Gandhi's entry to the politics means the fourth generation of Nehru-Gandhi family is still active in Indian politics.

Rahul Gandhi's younger sister Priyanaka was also tipped to enter the elections fray.

Gandhi's entry to the political scene is likely to rejuvenate the Congress party that has governed India for 42 out of the 57 years since independence.

Like the Kennedy family in the United States, the Gandhis are India's first family of politics. Both Indira Gandhi and her son Rajiv Gandhi were assassinated.

India's five-phase polling will begin April 20 and end May 10.
