ALBUQUERQUE, March 19 (UPI) -- Officials announced Friday in New Mexico an agreement has been reached for a environmental cleanup at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., and Democrat Gov. Governor Bill Richardson announced the agreement that will ensure pollution created during the laboratory's 60 years of operation will be cleaned up in a timely manner.
The agreement enables New Mexico's environmental department to collect $43 million in special funding authorized by Congress for the cleanup.
Domenici said the agreement would enable cleanup crews to complete the job 20 years earlier than originally projected.
Richardson said the clean-up order would protect New Mexicans for generations to come.
"It is a tough plan that will ensure our resources, including our precious, limited water, will be cleaned up and protected," he said.
