The incident happened the same day U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld visited Iraq and heard an upbeat assessment of Iraqi security.

NBC television said Thursday Bremer's convoy hit an explosive device and come under small arms fire as it drove back into the city from the Baghdad airport. The convoy was able to speed away and no one was injured, NBC said.

The most senior foreign official to be killed in Iraq was U.N. special envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello. He was one of at least 23 people killed Aug. 19 when a suicide truck devastated the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad. More than 100 people were also injured.
