MANAGUA, Nicaragua, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Former Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Aleman was sentenced in the capital, Managua, Sunday to 20 years in prison for campaign-related corruption.
Aleman, 57, was convicted of money-laundering, fraud, embezzlement and electoral crimes, the BBC reported.

The former Nicaraguan leader, who ruled the nation from 1997 to 2002, diverted nearly $100 million of state funds into his party's election campaign, authorities charged.
Aleman was arrested in December last year, but a judge last month released him from jail and put him under house arrest on health grounds.
It is unclear where Aleman will now serve his sentence, the BBC said.
