Schwarzenegger blows away recall rivals

SACRAMENTO, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger easily outdistanced the rest of the candidates on the ballot to replace Gov. Gray Davis in California's recall election Tuesday.

With more than 71 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday, Schwarzenegger had 48 percent of the vote to succeed Davis. Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante was second with 32 percent. State Senator Tom McClintock was third with 13 percent.

Peter Camejo of the Green Party was fourth with less than 3 percent. Columnist-author Arianna Huffington, who had dropped out of the race, attracted more than 33,000 votes -- accounting for just 0.7 percent of the replacement votes cast.

The top 10 vote getters also included former baseball commission Peter Ueberroth, pornographer Larry Flynt and actor Gary Coleman. The former star of "Diff'rent Strokes" had more votes than Bill Simon -- the Republican candidate who lost to Davis last November and had dropped out as an active recall candidate.
