Iran to cut its U.N. nuclear cooperation

TEHRAN, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- An Iranian diplomat announced Monday his nation will reduce its cooperation with the United Nation's nuclear arm.

The move comes following a demand that Iran prove its nuclear aims are peaceful.

The BBC reported Ali Akbar Salehi, Iran's representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency, said Tehran had been allowing the IAEA more than is required under the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty "to show good will and transparency."

But since the IAEA has presented Iran with an Oct. 31 deadline to disclose all its nuclear activities, Salehi said Iran will now act only "according to the current regulations."

During a television interview, Salehi criticized the decision to set the deadline, but did not say whether Iran would try to meet it.

Said Salehi, "Irrespective of whether we oppose or agree to the deadline, setting a deadline from the logical point of view is unacceptable."
