Arafat wants truce reinstated

GAZA CITY, Gaza, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is calling for a new cease-fire a day after an Israeli strike against Hamas leaders in Gaza City killed a bystander.

At least 20 others were injured in the attack, which failed to hit its targets.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad called an end to the truce with Israel after Israelis killed Hamas co-founder Ismail Abu Shanab last week. The attack followed the bombing of a Jerusalem bus that killed 21.

Arafat said the Palestinian Authority is working with Egypt and Saudi Arabia to reinstate the cease-fire but the BBC said, however, militants may ignore pleas for peace.

In a statement issued by his office, Arafat accused Israel of failing to follow the so-called "roadmap" to peace. He said, however, he was willing to take action against militants if Israel refrains from further attacks, Ha'aretz reported.

Israel Radio quoted Israeli Defense Forces officials as saying they will continue to target militants to foil terror attacks.
