Cornyn, Perry lead in Texas poll

HOUSTON, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Republican John Cornyn holds a six-point lead over Democrat Ron Kirk in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Phil Gramm, R-Texas, according to a Houston Chronicle-KHOU-TV poll released Thursday. Republican Gov. Rick Perry holds a nine-point lead over Democratic challenger Tony Sanchez in a hot race that could set a state campaign spending record.
