World Cup: Costa Rica scores PK off of crossbar, goalkeeper's head

June 28 (UPI) -- Costa Rica needed a few lucky bounces to score the tying goal in its 2-2 draw with Switzerland at the World Cup in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, Wednesday.

Sweden led 2-1 in the Group E match at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium before Costa Rica earned a penalty kick in the third minute of stoppage time. Midfielder Bryan Ruiz lined up to take the kick against Swedish goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Ruiz ripped his tying shot attempt into the overhead crossbar. The ball bounced back toward the midfielder, before drilling Sommer in the back of the head and going into the net.

The score capped off the second comeback of the game for the Costa Ricans. Sweden went up 1-0 in the 31st minute on a goal from Blerim Dzemaili. Kendall Waston tied the game for Costa Rica in the 56th minute.

Josip Drmic appeared to net the game-winning score in the 88th minute, before Ruiz drained the equalizer with some help from Sommer.

Switzerland advanced into the round of 16 with the draw.

The Swiss face Sweden at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Petersburg. Switzerland also advanced into the round of 16 at the World Cup tournaments in 2014, 2006 and 1994. The Swiss team reached the quarterfinals in 1954.
