Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh hires Greg Roman, Jesse Minter as coordinators

Feb. 7 (UPI) -- New Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh filled out his staff by hiring offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.

The Chargers announced the Minter hiring Tuesday night. Sources told NFL Network, ESPN and The Athletic on Tuesday that Roman also agreed to join the staff.

Minter, 40, spent the last two years working under Harbaugh as the defensive coordinator at Michigan. He worked as a defensive backs coach and assistant under his brother, Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, from 2017 through 2020.

Minter also worked at Vanderbilt, Georgia State, Indiana State, Cincinnati and Notre Dame.

The Wolverines had the best defense in college football last season, allowing a national-low 10.4 points and 247 yards per game.

The Chargers, who fired defensive-leaning head coach Brandon Staley in December, allowed the fifth-most yards last season. They surrendered the third-most passing yards and ranked 17th against the run.

Derrick Ansley was the Chargers' defensive coordinator last season. Renaldo Hill held the role in 2022 and 2021 under Staley. They ranked No. 20 and No. 23 in yards allowed in 2022 and 2021.

Roman, 51, was offensive coordinator for the Ravens from 2019 through 2022. He started his tenure under John Harbaugh with the Ravens in 2017. He did not work for a team this season.

Roman worked under Jim Harbaugh as offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 through 2014 and as an assistant coach at Stanford in 2009 and 2010.

The veteran play caller also spent two seasons as offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills.

Roman helped the Ravens build one of the most dominant rushing offenses in the NFL. They led the league in rushing twice during his tenure and ranked inside the Top 3 in rushing yards all four years.

The Bills also led the league in rushing in two years under Roman. The 49ers were a Top 5 rushing offense in three of Roman's four years with the franchise.

The Chargers ranked 18th in total yards and 25th in rushing this season. They were the No. 9 offense in 2022, with the No. 3 passing offense, but totaled the third-fewest rushing yards that season.
