Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo, Gus Edwards among injured in NFL's Week 3

Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Quarterbacks Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo, running back Gus Edwards and wide receiver Mike Williams were among the notable players to sustain injuries in Week 3 of the 2023 NFL season.

Players injured in Sunday's games will undergo further medical evaluation this week to determine the extent of their injuries and potential timelines to return.

Carr sustained a right shoulder injury in the third quarter of the New Orleans Saints' 18-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday in Green Bay, Wis. Carr, who was sacked on the play, did not return to the game.

Saints coach Dennis Allen said he did not know the severity of the injury Sunday night. Sources told NFL Network that Carr could miss time, but is not expected to be out for the rest of the season.

Saints offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz was ruled out because of a concussion. Packers cornerback Carrington Valentine (bicep) and linebacker De'Vondre Campbell (ankle) also were ruled out because of injuries.

Carr completed 13 of 18 passes for 103 yards and a score in the loss. Backup Jameis Winston completed 10 of 16 passes for 101 yards in relief of Carr.

The Saints (2-1) will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-0) on Sunday in New Orleans. The Packers (2-1) will host the Detroit Lions (2-1) on Thursday in Green Bay.

The Lions, who beat the Atlanta Falcons (2-1) 20-6 on Sunday in Detroit, lost two offensive linemen because of injuries. Tackles Matt Nelson (ankle) and Dan Skipper (hamstring) left that victory early.

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was among the players evaluated for a concussion in Sunday's games. Garopppolo, who did not exit during the 23-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Las Vegas, was evaluated after the game. He did not participate in a postgame news conference.

Garoppolo completed 28 of 44 passes for 324 yards and two scores in the loss. He also threw three interceptions. Brian Hoyer is the Raiders' second-string quarterback.

Raiders linebacker Curtis Bolton sustained a knee injury and left the game early.

The Raiders (1-2) will face the Los Angeles Chargers (1-2) on Sunday in Inglewood, Calif. The Steelers (2-1) will face the Houston Texans (1-2) on Sunday in Houston.

Chargers star wide receiver Mike Williams and safety Derwin James Jr. were among the players injured in their 28-14 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in Minneapolis.

Williams totaled seven catches for 121 yards and a score. He sustained a left knee injury in the third quarter. Williams was carted off the field and did not return.

Veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen led the Chargers with 215 yards on 18 catches in the victory. He also threw a 49-yard touchdown pass. Joshua Palmer, Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis are the other wide receivers on the Chargers roster.

James sustained a hamstring injury and left in the fourth quarter of the victory. He did not return. The star safety totaled seven combined tackles in the win. He leads the Chargers with 24 tackles this season.

He told The Athletic after the game that he doesn't consider the injury major and he will undergo an MRI on Monday. Alohi Gilman, Raheem Layne, J.T. Woods and A.J. Finley are the other safeties on the Chargers roster.

The Vikings (0-3) will battle the Carolina Panthers (0-3) on Sunday in Charlotte, N.C.

The Panthers lost several players in their 37-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in Seattle. Wide receiver Jonathan Mingo left the game early because of a concussion. Safety Xavier Woods (hamstring) and linebacker Frankie Luvu (hip) also sustained injuries and did not return.

Seahawks defensive end Dre'Mont Jones sustained a hip injury and did not return.

The Seahawks (2-1) will battle the New York Giants (1-2) on Oct. 2 in East Rutherford, N.J.

Baltimore Ravens running back Gus Edwards was another player evaluated for a concussion in Sunday's games. Edwards totaled 11 carries for 51 yards, but didn't receive a carry over the final eight minutes of the loss.

Ravens running back Melvin Gordon totaled 10 carries for 32 yards and caught two passes for 23 yards in the setback. Fellow backup Kenyan Drake totaled three touches for 31 yards from scrimmage.

Ravens linebacker David Ojabo (ankle) and wide receiver Tylan Wallace (hamstring) also left the game early because of injuries.

Chicago Bears defensive backs Josh Blackwell (hamstring) and Tyrique Stevenson (illness) and Jaylon Johnson (hamstring) all left early because of injuries in their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Kansas City, Mo.

Chiefs offensive tackle Prince Tega Wanogho sustained a quad injury in the loss.

The Bears (0-3) will host the Denver Broncos (0-3) on Sunday in Chicago. The Chiefs (2-1) will battle the New York Jets (1-2) on Sunday in East Rutherford.

The Ravens (2-1) will face the Cleveland Browns (2-1) on Sunday in Cleveland. The Colts (2-1) will play the Los Angeles Rams (1-1) on Sunday in Indianapolis.

Broncos linebacker Josey Jewell (groin) left early during a lopsided 70-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in Miami Gardens Fla.

Dolphins defensive lineman Jaelan Phillips (oblique) and cornerback Eli Apple (concussion) also left that game early. The Dolphins (3-0) will take on the Buffalo Bills (2-1) on Sunday in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Two games will wrap up Week 3 on Monday night. The Buccaneers will host the Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) at 7:15 p.m. in Tampa, Fla. The Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) will then host the Rams at 8:15 p.m. in Cincinnati.
