Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed veteran running back Spencer Ware.

Kansas City announced the move Tuesday night. The Chiefs waived wide receiver Gehrig Dieter in a corresponding transaction.

Ware, 28, had 470 yards from scrimmage and two scores in 13 games for the Chiefs in 2018. He was released in September.

Ware led the Chiefs with 921 rushing yards and picked up 1,368 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns during his 2016 campaign. He originally joined the franchise as a free agent in 2015 after starting his career as a sixth round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Ware has 2,256 yards from scrimmage and 13 scores in 40 career NFL appearances.

The Chiefs were in need of depth at the running back position after Damien Williams and Darrel Williams each sustained injuries. LeSean McCoy and Darwin Thompson are the only other healthy running backs on the Chiefs' roster. McCoy is likely to start for the Chiefs in Week 14.

McCoy has a team-high 410 rushing yards this season. Damien Williams has 309 yards on the ground, while Darrel Williams has 141 rushing yards.

Ware spent some time with the Indianapolis Colts earlier this season, but was eventually released with an injury settlement. He worked out for the Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders before returning to Kansas City.

The Chiefs battle the New England Patriots at 4:25 p.m. EST Sunday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
