Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Former Notre Dame football coach and current New Mexico coach Bob Davie will not travel for the Lobos' game against the Irish Sept. 14 at Notre Dame.
Davie announced his absence for the game Thursday. The coach is recovering from a medical incident which required his recent hospitalization following the Lobos' win against Sam Houston State Aug. 31. Sage Tuitele will be the Lobos' acting head coach.
Joe Dailey, Jordan Peterson and Perry Eliano will handle the offensive, defensive and special teams duties against the Irish.
"While I will be around next week and involved, I have decided to not make the trip to South Bend for our Sept. 14 game with Notre Dame," Davie said. "After receiving advice from my doctors and wife, I wanted to make this decision now so our team and coaching staff could go into the weekend with clarity and consistency.

"My doctors have said that with no setbacks I can expect a full recovery with no limitations. I have great confidence in our staff and this gives us our best chance for success and limits the distractions."
Davie, 64, coached Notre Dame from 1997 through 2001, compiling a 35-25 record. He was fired after a 5-6 record in his final season with the Irish. Davie went on to become an ESPN analyst before being hired to coach New Mexico in 2012. Davie owns a 34-54 record in 88 games with the Lobos.
"We are very grateful that coach Davie had an opportunity [Thursday] to briefly visit with his team and coaches," Lobos athletic director Eddie Nunez said in a statement. "I know they appreciated being able to see him and visit with them."
Davie will conduct his regular weekly press luncheon Tuesday.
"As coach Davie continues to recover, we ask that you continue to respect his privacy until he is able to return to the sidelines," Nunez said.
Notre Dame hosts New Mexico at 2:30 p.m. EDT Saturday, Sept. 14 at Notre Dame Stadium.
