Quarterback Russell Wilson hopes to receive a contract extension from the Seattle Seahawks before his current deal ends at the end of next season, but according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Wilson expects the Seahawks will put the franchise tag on him. Wilson has a 2019 salary cap number of $25.286 million, so it will cost the Seahawks $30.34 million to keep him for another season after the expiration of his current deal.

"Expectations can change in the NFL overnight; if the Seahawks are good next year and Wilson has an MVP-caliber season and they go to the playoffs after stripping down and breaking apart the Legion of Boom (defense), it might be hard to do anything other than pay Wilson like a franchise quarterback," according to Florio.
If Wilson was tagged a second time, it would cost the Seahawks a minimum of $36.41 million, and that number would increase to about $52.43 million for a third season, which simply will not happen.
The 29-year-old Wilson has been the Seahawks' starting quarterback since they took him in the third round (No. 75 overall) out of Wisconsin in the 2012 NFL Draft, and has led them to a 65-40-1 regular season record, never missing a start.
Wilson has thrown for 161 touchdowns against 56 interceptions and led Seattle to the Super Bowl twice, including a 43-8 rout of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVII in 2013. The following year, Seattle lost Super Bowl XLIX to the New England Patriots, 28-24.
