Seattle Seahawks poised to bring back cornerback Byron Maxwell

The Seattle Seahawks may have found a familiar face to help them deal with the loss of cornerback Richard Sherman.

According to multiple outlets on Monday, the Seahawks will sign free-agent cornerback Byron Maxwell to a contract in the wake of Sherman sustaining a season-ending Achilles injury during the team's 22-16 victory over the Arizona Cardinals last week.

Maxwell, who worked out for the club on Monday, was selected by Seattle in the sixth round of the 2011 draft.

The 29-year-old made 17 starts with the club from 2013-14 before signing a six-year, $63 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. He spent one season with the Eagles before being traded to the Miami Dolphins.

Maxwell fell out of favor with the Dolphins after losing his starting job earlier this season. He had 61 tackles, two interceptions and five forced fumbles in 15 games with the team over the past two seasons.

Sherman had started 99 consecutive regular-season games for Seattle before sustaining his injury in the third quarter against Arizona on Thursday.

Jeremy Lane likely will replace Sherman as the starting cornerback opposite rookie Shaquill Griffin. The Seahawks had agreed to send Lane to the Houston Texans in the Duane Brown trade, only to see the cornerback's failed physical void his inclusion in the deal.
