Mike Evans: Tampa Bay Buccaneers waive WR Freddie Martino to make room for receiver

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived Freddie Martino to make room on the active roster for fellow wide receiver Mike Evans, the team announced Monday.

Evans served a one-game suspension by the NFL for his role in an altercation against the New Orleans Saints on Nov. 5. The 24-year-old Evans leads the team in receptions (40) and receiving yards (532) and is tied for top honors with tight end Cameron Brate with four touchdown catches.

Martino did not have a reception on Sunday as Tampa Bay (3-6) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 15-10 victory over the New York Jets at Raymond James Stadium.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Martino, who was promoted to the active roster on Wednesday, had spent the season on the team's practice squad after joining Tampa Bay as a free agent in 2016. Last season, he played in 13 games for the Buccaneers, catching eight passes for 142 yards and one touchdown.

Martino will be eligible to return to the Bucs' practice squad if he clears waivers.
