Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers have signed linebacker Shayne Skov.

San Francisco announced the one-year deal on Thursday. Skov, 27, has spent three seasons with the 49ers. The Stanford product has two tackles and 12 tackles on special teams in 24 appearances for the franchise. He was waived on May 2. Skov, a San Francisco native, had 355 tackles, 40.5 tackles for a loss, 17 sacks, 13 passes defended and five forced fumbles at Stanford. He was a first-team All-Pac 12 and second-team All-American in 2013.

The linebacker will wear No. 46 for the 49ers.

Skov has been used mostly as a special teams player, but he could be used more after rookie Donavin Newsom landed on injured reserve and with Reuben Foster currently handling a shoulder injury. Foster, the No. 31 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, is dealing with a mild AC joint sprain, according to multiple reports. Coach Kyle Shanahan named the 23-year-old Alabama product the team's starting weak-side linebacker Tuesday, according to the team website.

"Yeah, he [Foster] actually was very upset with me that he didn't [practice] today," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Thursday.

"We were just being safe with him. We know he hasn't been on it very long. It was sore after yesterday, stuff that happens, especially with linebackers a lot. I mean, [LB NaVorro Bowman] Bo went out halfway through practice with the same thing. [Linebackers coach] Johnny [Holland] ended up pulling Bo out because his shoulder was sore. It was physical out there, especially going against another team. The way linebackers have to fit on people, and Reuben had some soreness so we didn't feel it was worth it to put him out there today."

San Francisco also has Dekoda Watson at weak-side linebacker. Bowman, Ahmad Brooks, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Brock Coyle and Eli Harold join Skov in the linebacking corps.

Shanahan said he expects Foster to play in Saturday's preseason contest. The 49ers host its second preseason game at 10 p.m. against the Denver Broncos at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
