Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Cornerback Asa Jackson has agreed to a contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
Jackson signed a one-year deal Tuesday, according to the 49ers. The franchise also waived/injured cornerback Zach Franklin in a corresponding move.
The 27-year-old was a fifth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2012 NFL Draft. He appeared in three games during his rookie campaign. Jackson started six games in 2014, registering three passes defended. He joined the Detroit Lions last offseason and went on to appear in four games last season.
Jackson has been suspended twice for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. He was first banned in 2012, before getting docked eight games in 2013.
Jackson has also spent time with the New York Giants, Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals. He played collegiately at Cal Poly, where he had 199 tackles, 40 passes defended, eight interceptions, three forced fumbles and a sack in 43 games.
He will wear No. 31 for the 49ers.
Franklin signed with the 49ers on May 4 as an undrafted free agent. The Washburn University product had 109 tackles, 32 passes defended, six tackles for a loss, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumbles in 45 college appearances.
San Francisco ranked No. 14 last season in passing yards allowed.
The 49ers signed linebacker Austin Calitro and put linebacker Malcolm Smith on injured reserve on Monday.
