Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Nine-year veteran Brandon Flowers has decided to retire from the NFL. Flowers, 31, will make the official announcement on Tuesday, according to the NFL Network. He is currently a free agent after spending his last three seasons with the San Diego Chargers. Flowers was a second round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2008 NFL Draft. He played six seasons for the Chiefs, making his lone Pro Bowl appearance in 2013.

The Virginia Tech product was college teammates with Kam Chancellor, Tyrod Taylor and Eddie Royal, among other NFL standouts.
The Los Angeles Chargers cut Flowers in March, before he was due to receive a $9 million salary.
He had 28 tackles, an interception and a touchdown last season in six games, before landing on injured reserve with a concussion.
The Pittsburgh Steelers, Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots all expressed interest in Flowers this offseason.
Flowers signed a four-year, $36 million contract with the Chargers in 2015. The cornerback received a career-high ranking of No. 75 on the NFL's list of the Top 100 players in 2013.
He had 490 tackles, 111 passes defended, 21 interceptions, five fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles, four touchdowns and three sacks in his nine-year pro tenure.
