Green Bay Packers sign TE Emanuel Byrd, put CB on injured reserve

Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Undrafted free agent Emanuel Byrd is now a member of the Green Bay Packers.

The tight end signed with the franchise on Friday, according to Packers executive vice president and general manager Ted Thompson.

Byrd played collegiately at Marshall, where he had 456 yards and four touchdowns on 45 receptions in 21 games. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound pass catcher originally signed on May 9 with the Kansas City Chiefs but was released on Tuesday. The 22-year-old also played quarterback and tight end at Georgia Military College before joining the Thunder Herd.

Green Bay also placed cornerback Herb Waters on injured reserve, clearing a spot for Byrd. Waters injured his shoulder in offseason workouts and aggravated the injury again in training camp. He played on the Packers' practice squad last season before he was promoted to the team's active roster in the playoffs. He registered one special teams tackle in two appearances. He will miss the 2017 season due to the injury.

Undrafted free agent wide receiver Michael Clark signed in May with the franchise. Green Bay also recently waived defensive tackle Aiulua Fanene because of a non-football injury. He signed with the franchise on Thursday.

Byrd will wear No. 49. The Packers had a Family Night Scrimmage on Friday before their first preseason game Thursday at Lambeau Field. The Packers are hosting the Philadelphia Eagles in Green Bay.
