Gaffney, 26, was a sixth-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has never appeared in an NFL game. Gaffney suffered a torn lateral meniscus during the 2014 preseason and was later waived. The New England Patriots claimed him a few days later, and he spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons on injured reserve. The Patriots waived Gaffney in April of 2016 before re-signing him three days later. He was waived again in September before signing in October with the Patriots' practice squad. The Patriots also waived Gaffney in November, and signed him again in February to a futures contract, before waiving him again in March.

Gaffney has two Super Bowl rings from his tenure with the Patriots. He had 2,500 yards and 33 touchdowns on 486 carries during his college career at Stanford. He also played college baseball for the Cardinal and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played 38 games for the State College Spikes, the Pirates' former Single-A affiliate.

The Jaguars have Leonard Fournette, T.J. Yeldon, Chris Ivory and Corey Grant currently on the depth chart at running back. Gaffney should compete behind Ivory for a roster spot. The Jaguars currently have 90 players on their active roster.
