New England Patriots: Tom Brady's high school releases 'first ever media interview'

By Alex Butler

July 18 (UPI) -- Tom Brady wore a plaid button-down, with a bright white undershirt for what could be his first ever media interview from Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, Calif.

The school posted the video in a Twitter link last week, saying: "Possibly Tom Brady's first ever media interview in the summer of 1994 #tbt @PadreAthletics @serrapadresfb." Brady appears to be about 17 or 18 years old in the footage.

He gets a brief introduction from the KPIX 5 newscaster before his sit-down.

"The question is who are tomorrow's stars," the newscaster said.

"Tonight Dan Fouts introduces you to some of the bay areas hottest young players. Some names to follow ... maybe the names you'll be hearing about for years to come," the newscaster said.

The footage employs some 90s-style graphics and music to transition over to the school for Brady's conversation in the bleachers.

"Over across the bay at San Mateo's Serra High School is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound quarterback named Tom Brady," Fouts said.

"After an MVP performance at Cal's football camp this summer, Cal High Magazine ranked Brady among the Top-6 quarterbacks in the state."

Brady was then asked about his strengths.

"My strengths...everybody tells me I have a pretty strong arm," Brady said in the interview. "Which is good. I'm pretty accurate with it. I think I need to work on my speed a little bit, but hopefully that will come in time."

The speed didn't come.

Brady, 39, has never rushed for more than 119 yards in a season. He has averaged just 62 rushing yards per season during his NFL career. At Michigan, he netted -150 rushing yards.

But it's safe to say analysts can look past that deficiency and glare at the quarterback's shiny five Super Bowl trophies.

"I've got a pretty good work ethic. So I think I can get the job done," the future Hall of Famer said in the video.

Brady is entering his 18th season. He has won nearly 78 percent of the games he has started. His 208 career wins are the most in NFL history.

"The exceptional athlete and usually the one that's the world class athlete, that makes it, is the person that has the willingness to make the commitment to be able to go that extra mile," Brady's high school coach Tom MacKenzie said in the interview.

More retro 90s MC Hammer music fades the video to black.

Brady would go on to backup Scott Dreisbach and Brian Greise at Michigan. He eventually beat out Drew Henson during his junior season. Brady was then infamously drafted in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft, where he would begin his career backing up Drew Bledsoe.
