June 15 (UPI) -- The Detroit Lions upgraded its offensive line Thursday by trading for Los Angeles Rams tackle Greg Robinson.

Robinson will compete at left tackle with newly signed lineman Cyrus Kouandjio, according to coach Jim Caldwell. The Lions are in need of depth at the position as Taylor Decker recovers from shoulder surgery.

"Since we drafted Greg, he has been committed to our organization, his teammates and community outreach," Rams general manager Les Snead said in a release. "We appreciate his dedication and the effort he's put forth over the past three seasons. We wish him the best as he embarks on this new chapter."

The Lions gave up an undisclosed pick in the 2018 NFL Draft in the trade.

Robinson was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has started 42 out of a possible 46 games at tackle and guard.

The Lions also signed Kouandjio as a free agent Thursday and waived long snapper Jimmy Landes and tackle Arturo Uzdavinis.

Caldwell talked to reporters about replacing Decker at Wednesday's mandatory minicamp session.

"For the most part, there's nothing that's really new in regards to what we expect from Cornelius [Lucas] because he's played before," Caldwell said. "He's gotten a lot of snaps there [left tackle]. He's better at what he does and we're pleased with where he is. Joe Dahl has played some at tackle, but he's also been a guy that's played a little guard for us and even some center. He's coming along."

"Obviously, it's not full-padded work with linemen," Caldwell told reporters. "I think that's when you really get an opportunity to kind of see what's happening out there in terms of how they're adjusting, when you can really go after it. We're certainly not there yet, so from an assignment standpoint, from a learning standpoint, they're progressing nicely."

Caldwell has maintained that he'll offer an update on Decker at training camp.

"He played a lot of football for us, so I think that certainly bodes well. It's a little different for a guy that didn't play much for you," Caldwell told reporters at OTAs. "You expect him to do something for you in the fall. I think he's one of those guys that certainly has proven that he can play in this league. He's getting better, really coming along, making more and more progress and I think you'll see."
