FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The attempts by the New York Jets to clean up the circus atmosphere surrounding the team took another hit last weekend, when the New York Post reported third-year linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin is being sued by a Queens man for a fight that happened in April.

Jean Lopez, 22, alleged that Mauldin teamed up with Reginald Cook to beat him up inside a New York City nightclub. The Post reported the incident happened after Lopez spilled champagne on Mauldin.

Mauldin's lawyer told the Post that the lawsuit is "without merit." Mauldin, speaking Tuesday during the Jets' minicamp, said he was shocked to learn of the suit.

"What he said is the thing that's being said right now," Mauldin told reporters. "So, I can't really say too much about it. Again, it's pending. I can't talk too much about it."

Two other Jets players have legal issues hanging over their heads. Second-year linebacker Darron Lee, who was captured on video arguing with a woman before he was carried away by teammate Leonard Williams during a concert in New York City on June 3, declined to go into detail about the incident on Tuesday.

"Definitely knew you guys would probably have questions about that, but the NFL still has an investigation going on, so I can't really answer anything right now," said Lee, who was not disciplined by the Jets. "Once the investigation is over with, then I'll probably be able to speak on it."

Wide receiver Robby Anderson was arrested for resisting arrest with violence at a music festival in Miami on May 8. He is scheduled to go on trial beginning Sept. 11.
