New York Jets could still trade or cut WR Eric Decker before season

April 7 (UPI) -- Eric Decker appeared in just three games last season for the New York Jets. Now the franchise might be looking to move on from the veteran.

The New York Daily News reported Friday that you shouldn't "be surprised" if the veteran wide receiver "isn't on the roster this season."

Wide receiver needy teams such as the Tennessee Titans could covet Decker for his experience and red zone specialty. The seven-year veteran had nine catches for 194 yards and two touchdowns in 2016. In 2015, he scored 12 touchdowns and had 1,027 receiving yards on 80 receptions. That season marked Decker's third season of 11 or more receiving scores.

Decker, 30, is due $7.25 million this season and $7.5 million in the final year of his deal in 2018.

The Jets are also shopping Sheldon Richardson. The Daily News evaluated Richardson's player-for-pick value at a second-round draft selection.

Decker landed on injured reserve on Oct. 12 with a torn rotator cuff. He underwent hip surgery on Oct. 18 and shoulder surgery on Nov. 15. SNY TV reported in February that it's a "good bet" that the Jets ask Decker to take a pay cut if he does stay with the franchise.

But the decision still looms on if the Jets will just release the playmaker. ESPN reported in March that the Jets weren't "done cutting players," and named Decker as a possibility.

The Jets are expecting Decker to be healthy enough to participate in non-contact OTAs.

"He's been making good progress and should be ready to go. I anticipate him being ready to start the season unless there's a setback that we're not aware of." Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan told reporters in March.

With Brandon Marshall shipping off to the New York Giants this offseason, Decker remains the top pass-catching target on the Jets' current roster. A lackluster quarterback group of Josh McCown, Bryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg could be tossing to Decker, Quincy Enunwa, Robby Anderso as its top options next season, unless the team decides to upgrade via the 2017 NFL Draft or in free agency.
