April 3 (UPI) -- A young New York Giants defensive lineman was due $615,000 next season before deciding to retire Monday.

UCLA product Owa Odighizuwa was entering his third season for the Giants after appearing in 14 games in 2016. The defensive end has three career tackles and one pass defense.

"I have all love for everyone...at the point and time I believe it's in my best interest to take sometime to get away from the game," Odighizuwa tweeted Monday afternoon.

Odighizuwa, 25, is under contract through 2018 and is due $705,000 that season.

"However this is the best platform to express something of the things that has been on my mind for a while," Odighizuwa tweeted. "I truly apologize that it has to be made known like this."

The Giants picked Odighizuwa in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
