New England Patriots' Matt Patricia disses Roger Goodell with clown shirt

Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Robert Kraft called the New England Patriots' Super Bowl 51 victory the "sweetest" he has had.

Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia offered an insight as to why Kraft believes that on Monday, when the Patriots team plane landed in Boston.

When stepping off of the plane, Patricia was spotted wearing a blue shirt with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's face on it. The photo of Goodell had a red clown nose.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady sat out the first four games of the season due to a suspension for his role in DeflateGate. The DeflateGate saga lasted more than 500 days, before Brady eventually accepted the brief ban. Kraft, the team's owner, was critical of Goodell during the investigation, even once demanding that the NFL apologize if it found no wrongdoing by his franchise regarding accusations of under-inflated footballs.

Brady also poked fun at Goodell recently when he appeared in a commercial for Shields Health Care. The all-time great gunslinger won Super Bowl 51 MVP honors after passing for 466 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's win against the Atlanta Falcons.

Patricia, 42, has served as the Patriots' defensive coordinator since 2012. He began his tenure in Foxborough as an offensive assistant in 2004. He has also served as the Patriots' assistant offensive line coach, linebackers coach, and safeties coach. The Patriots allowed the fewest points in the NFL this season. New England has finished in the top-3 in point differential in four of the last five seasons, ranking No. 1 in that category three times.

Patricia has had offseason interviews set up with the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, and Los Angeles Rams.
