The Buffalo Bills are targeting Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott for their head-coaching opening. The Bills' search for a new coach appears to be nearing an end with McDermott emerging as the likely choice, the Buffalo News reported Tuesday night. The newspaper said a deal could be finalized within the next day or so and McDermott could be introduced to the media by Friday.

The 42-year-old McDermott is interviewing for a second time with Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula at their home in Boca Raton, Fla., according to multiple reports.
McDermott spent Tuesday being interviewed by the San Francisco 49ers.
According to the Buffalo News, McDermott apparently was as impressed with the Bills owners as they were with him during dinner and a meeting last week.
McDermott spent the past six seasons leading the Panthers' defense after two seasons (2009-10) as the Philadelphia Eagles' defensive coordinator.
The Pegulas tapped Bills general manager Doug Whaley to lead the coaching search after Rex Ryan was fired on Dec. 27.
The Bills finished 7-9 in 2016, missing the postseason for the 17th consecutive season. In 31 games as Bills coach, Ryan had a 15-16 record.
Bills interim head coach Anthony Lynn also is considered a top candidate. He has interviewed with multiple teams, including a visit with the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday.
The Bills have interviewed four candidates, including Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin and Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard.
