Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten does not believe longtime friend Tony Romo's days of playing football are over after the veteran quarterback conceded the starting job to rookie sensation Dak Prescott.

"I don't think he's planning on retiring anytime soon," Witten told reporters Wednesday, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I wouldn't bet against him."

Romo, a 36-year-old four-time Pro Bowler who missed the Cowboys' first nine games this season after sustaining a compression fracture in his lower back during the preseason, said Tuesday that Prescott had won the job.

"He has earned the right to be our quarterback," Romo said. "As hard as that is for me to say, he's earned that right."

"If you think for a second I don't want to be out there, then you probably never felt the pure ecstasy of competing and winning."

Prescott has guided the Cowboys to an 8-1 start, giving Dallas the best record in the NFL. The 23-year-old former Mississippi State standout has thrown for 2,339 yards and 14 touchdowns in nine games.

In 12 seasons with Dallas, Romo has 34,154 passing yards and 247 touchdowns in 155 games.
