Dak Prescott has turned heads but Tony Romo is expected to challenge the rookie for QB1, according to Jerry Jones.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admitted on Tuesday what many were thinking in regard to the team's quarterback situation.

"The key thing I want to emphasize is we probably are never going to have this totally sorted out," Jones said during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan. "We're going to play it by ear, play it as it comes. We can do that."

Veteran quarterback Tony Romo has been a limited participant in practice over the last two weeks as he recovers from a back injury sustained in the preseason.

Rookie Dak Prescott has turned heads in his place, leading Dallas to a 7-1 record and a share of the NFL's best record while also complicating the decision of just which quarterback will be under center when Romo returns to health.

Jones said he expects Romo to challenge for the starting job, but the owner stopped short of saying that the veteran is still the team's No. 1 quarterback.

"I know how bad he wants to compete," Jones said. "Any time he's limited because of injury, I hate that. It's always has been the biggest downer for a competitor.

"On the other hand, for Tony, there isn't anything more important than being on a team that is capable of winning and competing for the big prize."

Prescott, or perhaps Romo, will be under center on Sunday (4:25 p.m., ET) when the Cowboys vie for their eighth straight victory in a road game versus the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-4).

Romo, 36, has 12 NFL seasons under his belt -- all with Dallas -- and is a four-time Pro Bowler. The oft-injured quarterback has never reached the NFC Championship Game, only twice making it out of the first round.

Prescott, meanwhile, has taken the league by storm since debuting in Romo's absence. The 23-year-old out of Mississippi State has thrown for 2,020 yards and 12 touchdowns opposite two interceptions in eight games.
