Seattle Seahawks likely to use cap for Doug Baldwin, Steven Hauschka extensions

SEATTLE, May 7 (UPI) -- A balance of breakout production and career consistence is a necessary recipe for every NFL roster.

The Seattle Seahawks are using their salary cap to make sure of it. According to ESPN's John Clayton, the Seahawks could extend kicker Steven Hauschka. Haushka, 30, is in the final year of a three-year, $9.15 million contract. He is due $2.7 million. Clayton also reported that the team plans to use its cap space to lock up wide receiver Doug Baldwin.

Hauschka is a has hit nearly 87 percent of his career field goal attempts, but hit 93.5 percent last season and 94.3 percent in 2013.

Baldwin, 27, exploded last season when he led the NFL with 14 receiving touchdowns. He also caught 78 passes for 1,069 yards in 16 games. Before last season, Baldwin's career high for touchdown grabs in a season were the five scores he caught in 2013.

Baldwin signed a three-year, $13 million contract, with $8.5 guaranteed, in March 2014. He is currently due $4 million in 2016, pending an extension.

Marshawn Lynch wasn't the only big loss for Seattle this offseason. Following the running back's retirement, the team lost left tackle Russell Okung to the Denver Broncos, linebacker Bruce Irvin to the Oakland Raiders, defensive tackle Brandon Mebane to the San Diego Chargers, and several other Seahawks staples to free agency.
