Miami Dolphins going throwback for Monday Night Football

By Alex Butler

MIAMI, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A team that probably wishes it could 'throwback' to its roster of a few decades ago, will do that with its jerseys and field Monday.

The Miami Dolphins will sport jerseys modeled after the teams' inaugural 1966 season Monday night against the New York Giants in Miami.

Block numbers catch the eye with a bold orange outline while orange and blue sleeve stripes pay homage to the team's 50th Anniversary, on the jersey's aqua green body.

"Heck yeah," center Mike Pouncey told the team's website. "We see other teams around the league wearing throwback jerseys ever year. We're like, dang, we wish we could have one game for that and our wish came true. So we'll be excited to go in the throwback jersey, give us a different look on Monday night."

The Dolphins wore the throwback kit on Thanksgiving in 2003 in a 40-21 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

"They're cool uniforms," quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. "I did a photo shoot in them, I guess, in the summer. I got to see them and put them on and I was excited, they look pretty sweet."

A retro Dolphins logo and a diamond designed end zone will also be displayed Monday on the field at Sun Life Stadium.

Fans will even be given "white hankies tonight, like the old days at the Orange Bowl," according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.

The Dolphins [5-7] are coming off of a 15-13 win over the Baltimore Ravens in week 13, but have lost two of their last three games. The Giants [5-7] have lost three consecutive games and four of their last five contests.

Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. Monday on ESPN.
